Marble countertops are a beautiful, sophisticated choice for any kitchen especially if you have a more elegant or luxurious style. Marble is somewhat deceptively delicate, however, despite the fact that its heft and weight make it seem invulnerable. If you maintain your marble properly, though, it will be something you enjoy for many years.
Seal the Deal
As soon as the countertop is installed, it needs to be sealed at least two or three times. A proper seal is essential to the life of the stone, and will protect it against damage from liquids. The sign of a proper seal is the stone’s response to moisture. If water forms beads on the surface, the seal is complete. If liquid spreads or is absorbed, then the seal is not quite finished. Marble countertops need to be resealed about a year after installation to finalize the process. Recheck the seal periodically to make sure it is still intact. Reseal it anytime moisture starts absorbing into the stone.
Clean it Immediately
Marble is fairly durable and moderately tough, but it is also somewhat porous. This quality makes it moderately susceptible to stains because colored liquids will tend to seep in. To prevent this, make sure to wipe up any spilled liquids immediately, using only soap and water or a solution made for cleaning marble. Never use abrasive cleaners that can bleach the stone or damage the remaining sealant.
Be Delicate
As mentioned above, marble is a deceptively sensitive surface. It may seem like it will be impervious to damage, but this is a common misperception. The high polish that gives marble its luxurious shine also makes it quite easy to scratch, so you should never use your countertop as a cutting surface. Additionally, while the stone itself will probably not be hurt, the seal can be ruined by excessive heat. You shouldn’t place hot objects directly on the countertop. Extreme heat can even cause the marble to crack, which will most likely require a very expensive repair or replacement. Finally, the same porousness that makes marble susceptible to staining will also make a great home for microbes, so you shouldn’t use the surface to prepare raw meats.
Following these few simple guidelines can help protect your investment and make sure that it is there to enjoy throughout the life of the home.
