If you are living in one of the more popular areas in North Carolina like the Raleigh/Durham area, you may have noticed the recent population boom, and you may want to capitalize on it by selling your home. Selling in an up market like Durham may mean granite countertops, new cabinets, or even new floors. Some of these renovations are quite simple and can easily be accomplished by the homeowner. Others should almost never be done without professional help. Knowing when and when not to hire is one of the keys to saving money in the right place.
Professional help is most necessary for what could be considered the “big” jobs in the kitchen. For instance, for the installation of new tile floors or granite countertops, a reputable handyman or contractor should definitely be called. These tasks require expensive tools that the homeowner likely doesn’t have. Anything highly technical or requiring a license should be handled by professionals as well. Structural or electrical changes, or the installation of a new set of cabinets, or the adding or subtracting of windows all call for professional aid.
Other projects are much easier, though, that hiring a contractor is wasteful and unnecessary. Anything cosmetic you can change yourself. This includes painting walls or cabinets, or changing cabinet and drawer hardware. Once the major changes to the kitchen are done, pay the pro and and then get to work and take care of the minor things yourself.
A couple of things fall in between these two categories, and can be done without help as long as you are experienced. These jobs include installation of a new backsplash, or changing out faucet hardware, or changing lighting. To some degree, whether or not you will hire for these jobs will depend on the complexity of the job. Switching from one chandelier to another is relatively easy. Removing a central fixture and installing track lighting, however, is likely more complicated for the average homeowner but an electrician can get the job done. Backsplashes that are tailor-made from hardware stores are somewhat easy to install. Custom tile backsplashes that require tile cutting and precision tools should be assigned to a pro. Essentially, if a job requires more than a hammer, a screwdriver, and a paintbrush, then it is probably best left to the pros.
