Top 6 Stone Kitchen Countertops

Is it time to revamp your kitchen? Countertops make up a large portion of the aesthetics of your kitchen, so the material you use for them should be carefully considered. Don’t forget, there’s also function and practicality to factor into your decision. If you’re confused by all the different countertop materials or if you don’t know where to start, this article brings together some ideas of materials you can use.

Granite countertop

Granite has a lot going for it, making it one of the most popular countertop materials at the moment. It’s visually stunning with lots of unique character, it can withstand heat and scratches from utensils, it’s extremely easy to clean, and it’ll last you a long time. Granite can be an expensive material to use, but it has become more affordable in recent years.

Marble countertop

People adore marble for the timeless, luxury quality it brings to their kitchen. The veining in each slab of marble is different, giving you a unique kitchen countertop. Marble is another durable natural stone, but it is more prone to scratches and stains than granite. It also has a pretty high price tag, so it is often used on features like backsplash and islands rather than the whole kitchen.

Quartz countertop

Because quartz is an engineered stone, it has a few advantages over genuine natural stone. One of which is the number of colors it is available in. Quartz is easy to clean and does not need sealing, unlike some natural stones. It is also durable and heat-resistant, but it’s another material that can get expensive.

Soapstone countertop

Soapstone is a popular material in traditional-style kitchens, although it’s also being used with more modern styles now, as well. It’s not quite as tough as some of the other natural stones. It can be prone to scratches and scuffs, although you may be able to sand these out. It is still pretty resistant to heat and stains, though.

Limestone countertop

Limestone comes in wide variety of colors and patterns, generally all neutral tones. It is a porous stone, so it will need sealing in order to ward off stains and etches. Limestone countertops are great for creating an elegant, luxury aesthetic. Travertine is a type of limestone that’s often used. Your travertine countertop can be finished in different ways to create the appearance you’re after.

Onyx countertops

If you’re looking for a rarer natural stone to add to your kitchen, then you should consider onyx. It creates a striking appearance, especially when backlit, because it is a translucent material. Onyx does not stand up to scratches and stains like the other materials listed here, so it is normally more popular as a backsplash material rather than for your countertops.

Depending on the look you’re going for in your kitchen, there’s bound to be a material out there that’ll suit your needs perfectly. To find the perfect stone for your kitchen countertops, get in touch with Amanzi Granite today.

Rock Solid Farmhouse Sink Designs with Soapstone, Granite, and More

Farmhouse sinks are a timeless classic, offering great aesthetic appeal as well as lots of space for washing up large pots and pans. While the traditional farmhouse sink is made from porcelain, they are now available in a wide variety of materials, including natural stone.

We’ve put together some design ideas to help you choose the perfect farmhouse sink for your kitchen.

Custom design

Natural stone is much more customizable than materials like porcelain and stainless steel, so your stone farmhouse sink can be made with any design and to fit whatever space you have available. You can even have an ornately decorated sink like this marble example. You really have the freedom to choose how your farmhouse sink will look.

Rustic stone sink

Most kitchens display a nice polished aesthetic, with smooth porcelain or polished stone displayed prominently. To make your farmhouse sink stand out, you could choose a more rustic style instead. Sinks can be carved from natural stone and left unpolished to produce that natural, rustic finish. Soapstone is a great option for that rustic look.

Mix and match with your countertops

You can have fun when choosing the material for your countertops and farmhouse sink. Use the same material and design for both to create a seamless finish, or contrast two different materials to make your farmhouse sink really stand out. A dark granite sink could offset white marble countertops, for example, or vice versa. Choose a combination that lets your sink and countertops complement each other perfectly.

Outdoor farmhouse sinks

Natural stone is great for outdoor use, as well, because it is durable and weather-resistant. A farmhouse sink can look great in an outdoor kitchen. Or maybe you just want an outdoor sink in your backyard or front porch for a convenient water supply while you’re gardening. Soapstone is an especially good option for outdoor use.

Curved corners

Because farmhouse sinks typically stick out slightly from the countertops and cabinets, they can pose a bit of a safety risk in a house with children. Designing your sink with a smooth front surface and curved corners helps to make those bumps a little softer. It also produces a sleek finish, adding a bit of modern style to a more traditional piece.

Double farmhouse sinks

If you’ve got space for it, then a double farmhouse sink is a great design option for your kitchen. This provides even more space with two basins side-by-side. If you cook a lot, you could have one side for dishes and the other for food preparation. The size of each basin is up to you, depending on the space you have available.

Designing your farmhouse sink and your countertop should go hand in hand to make sure that they suit each other stylistically. If you need countertop installation or design ideas around Winston Salem, Greensboro, High Point, and Kernersville, then get in touch today.

Get Your Countertops Ready for the Holidays

It’s already December and the holidays are right around the corner! If you’re preparing a big feast on Christmas day or any other day this holiday season, then your kitchen and especially your countertops need to be prepared. Read on for our tips about getting your countertops ready for the holidays.

How do they look?

Your countertops should be something you’re proud to show off to friends and family, so you want to make sure they’re looking good before guests start visiting. The easiest way to boost the appearance of your countertops is by giving them a good clean. Warm, soapy water is fine for cleaning your stone countertops. Just wipe them with a wet cloth and then wipe up any leftover soap and water with a dry cloth afterward. Make sure not to leave soap residue on your surfaces. Avoid using any acidic cleaning products on your stone countertops.

Prepping for food prep

Do you have enough space for all the food prep you’ll be doing? Make sure that your countertops are clear of unnecessary clutter so that you won’t be restricted to one surface while preparing food. Make sure you have enough cutting boards, too, because using sharp knives directly on stone countertops can damage them.

Protect it from spills

Spills are pretty much inevitable over the holidays, with busy spaces and tipsy guests. Consider having your stone countertops resealed in preparation for the holiday season. This will help to protect them from any spills that occur and also give them a new shine to ensure that they look great.

Revitalize your kitchen

If you think your kitchen countertops are looking a little worn or if you’re just tired of the old design, you could give yourself an early Christmas present by having new countertops installed just in time for the holidays. Replacing just this one element of your kitchen can give it a completely new appearance. Wow your guests with new granite, marble, quartz, or soapstone countertops, and give yourself a refreshed kitchen that will last a long time.

If you need design help, then you can try out our virtual kitchen designer tool. This will help you imagine your space and how different natural stone materials will look in it. Hiring a Professional for New Countertop Installation

If you’re looking to save a few bucks on your home renovation project, your instinct might be to opt for DIY projects rather than bringing in the professionals. While this may be a viable option in some areas, other jobs are better left to the professionals. Let’s look at countertop installation and why it’s a job for a professional installation team.

The right tools

Cutting natural stone to size and then installing it requires a specific set of tools to get the job done properly. Taking countertop installation into your own hands will require for you to purchase these tools yourself, which can be expensive. Using these tools with no prior experience can also be a danger to yourself.

Familiarity with the material

Each type of natural stone has slightly different properties. It is always a good idea to hire a professional contractor that has experience with the material you are having installed for your countertops. This way, they know exactly how the stone should be handled and what will produce the best end result.

Efficient installation

If you have to teach yourself how to cut and install your kitchen countertop, you certainly aren’t going to be saving time on your kitchen remodel. A professional installer already knows what they’re doing and can get the job done much quicker than a DIYer. As well as saving you time and energy spent on the job itself, this also means that your home and kitchen will be in disruption for less time.

Seamless installation

Professional installation also ensures that your countertops look as good as possible once they’re installed. One complaint that homeowners have against natural stone countertops is the visibility of the seams between slabs or tiles. A professional who has lots of experience with installing countertops should know how to hide these seams as much as possible to create a continuous appearance for your countertop. Doing it yourself can also lead to mistakes that result in chips or scratches being left in the stone.

Extra services

If you hire a professional contractor to install your countertops, they can also carry out extra tasks like sealing your countertops for you. This will make your countertops less susceptible to staining, etching, and scratching, keeping it in top condition for longer.

Are you ready for new countertops in your kitchen? Don’t risk the DIY – contact us for professional installation in and around Winston Salem, Greensboro, High Point, and Kernersville.

Man Made Quartz vs. Quartzite: Which is the Right Countertop for You?

You’ve finally decided that quartz is the material for you when designing your new kitchen remodel and your new countertops. But, wait, what’s this? Quartzite? Sounds almost the same, but is it the same material and should you use it for your kitchen countertops? Let’s look at the difference between quartzite and man-made quartz to help you figure out which is right for you.

What’s the difference?

The main difference between the two countertop materials is that quartz countertops are man-made or engineered, while quartzite is a complete slab of natural stone.

Quartz countertops are a combination of natural quartz, normally in the form of chips or dusts, and resin, completed with pigments to achieve a variety of attractive colors. Despite being man-made, it is extremely natural looking.

Quartzite is a metamorphic rock that is created when sandstone rich in quartz is placed under intense heat and pressure. This process occurs naturally and the quartzite can then be mined for use.

Quartz or quartzite?

So, you can see that the two stones are pretty different in the way that they’re made, but what are they like as countertop materials?

Aesthetically speaking, both materials produce a striking, polished look for your countertops. Quartzite is generally a light-colored stone, similar to marble. As it is a natural stone, each piece will be completely unique with slightly different shades, patterns, and veinings. Quartz, on the other hand, can be more uniform as it is man-made. However, this also allows quartz to be made in a wide range of colors as pigments can be added to it during production.

Both quartz and quartzite are extremely durable, making them ideal materials for your kitchen countertops. Quartzite, however, is much more prone to staining and etching, so it will need to be sealed in order to prevent this. Man-made quartz does not need sealing because of the way it is made. Quartzite, on the other hand, is less prone to scratching and can also withstand heat slightly better than quartz.

When it comes to costs, quartzite is generally slightly more expensive than quartz because it needs to be cut into slabs to meet the specifications of each countertop. You can expect to pay $60+ per square foot for quartz and $70+ for quartzite.

If you have any more questions about these two countertop materials or are in need of countertop installation in North Carolina, the get in touch or come down and visit us at our Kernersville showroom.

Professional Installation Teams

Sometimes, when you’re going through a home improvement project, you have to deal with various different people along the way. Designers, suppliers, fabricators, plumbers, installation companies, and so on. Each time you deal with someone new, they are approaching your project without understanding your vision or what has been done already. It can be much better to reduce the number of people you deal with so that you can build a rapport with them and they can get a complete understanding of the project.

This is why working with a professional installation team from the likes of Amanzi Granite can really benefit your home improvement project. If you buy your countertops from the standard commercial stores like Home Depot, then they will likely outsource things like installation to someone else, or you can choose to just buy the material from them and go to a separate company for installation. You will also find that independent or boutique stores tend to have a much wider range of countertop options compared to these big brand stores.

With a complete installation team, the people that you buy your stone countertops from can also measure and cut the stone to fit your kitchen or bathroom, polish it or finish it in whatever style you choose, apply an edge to it, install it in your home, and seal it if necessary. This results in a much more seamless installation process, making it more likely that you get an end result that you’re completely satisfied with.

The team that you work with will be much for familiar with what you want from the stone and the countertop, so they’ll be better able to deliver exactly what you want. Working with the same people throughout the entire process also helps to form a connection with them, so you’ll feel more comfortable speaking up if you want something different. As well as this, the team will be extremely familiar with the stone because they have worked with it from the first step of the process, meaning they know exactly how it should be used and treated.

Having countertops installed in this manner also saves you a lot of time as you don’t have to compare your options each time you work on a different aspect of the process, and it can also help you to save money. If this sounds like the right option for you, then contact us for countertops and installation around Winston Salem, Greensboro, High Point, and Kernersville.

Man-Made Quartz Options

Natural stone is found in all sorts of wonderful colors and patterns. This range of choice is even more extensive when it comes to man-made quartz because it can be engineered in a wide variety of colors and patterns while still imitating the look of natural stone. With so many options to choose between, you might need some help getting started. So, here are some popular quartz color schemes and the styles they go well with.

Whites

If you’re looking for a neutral tone for your kitchen countertops, then there are lots of white quartz styles to choose from. A neutral color is easy to match to a wide range of kitchen color schemes and styles, so you don’t have to worry too much about finding the perfect match.

Classic, solid white countertops can be very striking, especially when paired with dark brown or black cupboards and décor. If you’re looking for a bit more detail and character to your stone, then white marbled quartz is a good choice as is taupe, which features flecks of grey and black detail.

Blacks

A solid black countertop is another striking choice. It is simple yet effective at creating an attractive focal point of the room. Black quartz countertops are best paired with lighter décor so that the overall tone of the room is not too overwhelming. Sleek, black countertops create a great, modern look for your kitchen.

Reds

If you’re looking for something a little more ‘out there’, then red quartz countertops such as this cherry example can work wonderfully. It can be paired with a variety of different color schemes, providing either a sleek modern look or a retro flair depending on the surrounding décor.

Leather Luxury: Try a Leather Finish on Your Granite Countertop

Natural stone is such a great material to work with because you have so many options for each property. There is a range of materials, colors, patterns, textures, and finishes. So, even using the same type of stone you can achieve lots of different looks and styles.

One trend for granite that has been growing in popularity recently is the leather finish. Read on to find out more about this design and whether or not it’s right for your countertops.

What is leather finish granite?

There are three main choices when it comes to the finish of your granite countertops – polished for a smooth and glossy appearance, honed for another smooth finish but with less shine than polished granite, and then leathered for a more textured finish. Polished has always been the favorite, but the other two options are surging in popularity, especially honed for marble surfaces and leathered for granite.

The leathered texture is achieved during the finishing process, where the stone is treated with a diamond-crusted brush. This chips away at some of the surface and leaves behind the natural contours of the stone. This process can be applied to different extents, able producing a varied degree of smoothness or roughness to leathered stone. The granite can still be sealed after this process is complete.

Advantages and disadvantages of leathered granite

One of the main talking points of leathered granite is the aesthetic that it produces. This could either be a pro or a con depending on your tastes and the style you are looking for. The texture produces a really unique look that’s full of character, bringing out the natural colors and shape of the original stone. This can create a rustic look that really draws the eye. Of course, this may not be to everyone’s tastes, but it can produce a wonderful aesthetic.

A definite advantage of the leathered texture is that it hides imperfections much easier than a polished finish. Spills, stains, scratches, and fingerprints are less likely to be visible thanks to the textured appearance, meaning you don’t have to wipe down your surfaces as often as with the other finishes. Leathered granite is slightly easier to scratch than polished stone, but this can be mitigated by sealing the granite.

The stone will also have tighter pores as a result of the leathering process compared to polishing, which can help to resist staining and improve hygiene. Although the smooth finish of polished or honed granite may be slightly easier to clean than leathered granite, this difference is minimal.

Reasons to Consider Home Renovation Projects

Are you considering undertaking a home renovation project? There are numerous benefits to doing so, but what tends to prompt this decision in the first place? There are two main reasons why someone decides to remodel their bathroom, kitchen, or whatever part of the house they think needs renovating.

To update style

The first reason is an aesthetic choice. Perhaps the room has become outdated in terms of style and it needs a refresh. Or, maybe you’ve just seen a new trend in home design and simply have to have it in your house.

Whatever motivates someone to desire a new style in their home, renovating that room or your home in its entirety is the best way to achieve it. The alternative is to just replace certain parts of the space, but this could leave you with mismatched styles in the same room.

Remodeling your entire kitchen, for example, may be more of an undertaking, but it allows you to have complete control over every decision. You could redesign the entire room to give you the kitchen of your dreams. If you’re renovating in preparation for selling your house, then the new style of the room can help to get your house sold and can even up the asking price.

To improve functionality

The other reason to take on a renovation project in your home is for better functionality. Perhaps the fittings and appliances in your home are getting old and don’t work as well as they used to. Again, you could simply replace these appliances with new ones that work better, but then it leaves everything else in the room out of date.

Renovating the whole room (or house) means that everything is new, so it is less likely to need repairing or replacing again in the near future.

Even if everything is working fine, a home renovation project can improve functionality in a number of surprising ways. Older appliances are simply not as efficient and economical as modern ones, so you could be losing money by keeping them running. You can also benefit from impressive features on modern fixtures and fittings, such as ovens that make it easier for you to prepare meals in lots of different ways.

Whatever your motivation, renovating your home offers a variety of benefits. We specialize in kitchens and bathrooms, so if you need help coming up with ideas for renovating these rooms, take a look at our kitchen and bathroom visualizer tools.
