8 Essential Questions to Ask When Shopping for Natural Stone

When it comes time to renovate your kitchen or bathroom, one of the decisions you’ll have to make is what type of countertop material to choose. There are many options available, but one of the most popular choices is natural stone. Stone provides a unique look that can’t be matched by other materials. However, before you buy stone for your home, there are a few questions you should ask yourself. In this blog post, we will discuss eight essential questions to ask before buying natural stone for your countertops!

How Thick Does It Need to Be?

Countertop slabs usually measure 2 centimeters (¾ inch) or 3 centimeters (1¼ inches). To give the illusion of an extra thick countertop, it’s common to laminate a 2-centimeter edge on its front.

Are There Different Types of Edges?

There are many different styles of edges to choose from.  You can select from a basic pencil edge or square edge, or go with a more rounded bullnose edge-or a half bullnose edge (rounded on the top and square on the bottom), a beveled edge and ogee edge are also very popular. You might also consider a waterfall edge, which runs down an entire side of an exposed cabinet on a kitchen island or bar.

Are There Fissures?

Nature has naturally created spaces of weakness in stone, often appearing as thin creases that are known as fissures. If a fissure appears in an area where the stone needs to be strong, such as near or around a sink or on top of an overhang, it can oftentimes prevent you from using that particular piece for your project due to its weakened state. Additionally, this could result in fracturing of the slab during fabrication.

Is It Strong Enough to Span?

Countertops have the remarkable ability to span across large areas- extending over dishwashers, breakfast bars, and more. In the case of manufactured stone such as quartz, maximum spans may be limited. Depending on how large an unsupported area is, your fabricator could advise a range of options which include: adding a stylish corbel or some other support, installing an unseen steel brace, or routing below the stone to fit in either metal or fiberglass rods. Your fabricator will guide you in assessing how much support your counter requires.

How Porous Is the Material?

Not all stone is the same; some possess unique qualities that make them superior to others. Some stones, such as marble, are more porous than others, and are more likely to absorb stains from substances like red wine and coffee. In comparison to other stones, soapstone is softer and can easily be scratched. Before settling on a stone, consider carefully how you intend to utilize it and the possible contact that could be damaging for the material.

Will the Stone Hold up Over Time?

The frequency of cleaning your stone surface depends on both the lifestyle you lead and how delicate it is. Be mindful that certain cleansing products can etch limestone, marble, or other materials.

What’s the Source of the Stone?

Stone is mined from quarries around the globe, including here in America. When choosing a material, one should contemplate its origin and production methods, the ecological effects of transporting it to your area as well as whether or not it is an eco-friendly, sensible and durable choice.

If you still have questions about your project and choosing the right stone, be sure to consult a professional. Is Quartzite the Right Countertop Material for Your Kitchen or Bathroom?

If you’re in the market for a new countertop and you’re considering quartzite, you’re making a wise decision. Quartzite is becoming more and more popular because of its durability and beauty. In this blog post, we’ll talk about the advantages of quartzite so that you can make an informed decision about whether it’s the right material for your kitchen.

Quartzite Countertops: What Are They?

Quartzite countertops are made from a metamorphic rock that is created when sandstone merges with shiny quartz crystals under intense heat and pressure. This process makes quartzite incredibly hard and durable, in addition to giving it a beautiful marble-like appearance. Quartzite has become increasingly popular because it can be used in a variety of ways, including kitchen countertops, bathroom vanities, fireplace surrounds, and flooring.

Manufacturing Process: How Are Quartzite Countertops Made?

Most quartzite countertops are made using a two-stage manufacturing process. First, the quartzite is cut into slabs of varying thicknesses; then it is polished and treated with a sealant to protect it from staining and water damage. The end result is a beautiful countertop that will last for many years.

Advantages of Quartzite Countertops

There are many advantages to choosing quartzite for your countertops.

Durability

Quartzite is incredibly durable and can withstand heavy wear and tear, meaning it will look great for years.

Scratch-Resistant

Quartzite is scratch-resistant, so it won’t show signs of wear or tear as easily as other materials. As a result, your quartzite countertop will look brand new for longer.

Low Maintenance

Quartzite is also surprisingly low-maintenance. To clean quartzite countertops, simply wipe it down with a damp cloth periodically and reseal it every few years to keep it looking its best. Use a non-acidic, low pH cleanser such as mild soap and water or a quartzite-specific cleaner which can typically be found at your local hardware store.

Beauty

Quartzite is a beautiful stone that comes in a variety of colors and styles, allowing you to customize your kitchen’s look. Some like when quartzite has a marble-like appearance and others enjoy more unique textures and designs that quartzite can bring to a space.

Heat-Resistance

Quartzite countertops resist heat and cold without cracking or sustaining other damage when exposed to extreme temperatures. This makes it ideal for kitchens where hot pans are used regularly.

UV-Resistance

Quartzite countertops are also UV-resistant, which means they won’t fade or discolor from long-term exposure to sunlight. This makes quartzite a great choice for outdoor kitchens or patios.

The Ultimate Guide to Caring for Your Granite Countertops

If you’re lucky enough to have granite countertops in your home, then you know that they are a beautiful and luxurious addition. However, it’s important to remember that they require a bit of upkeep in order to stay looking their best. In this blog post, we will discuss the best ways to care for your granite countertops so that they remain shiny and scratch-free for years to come!

Preventative Measures

The best way to care for your granite countertops is by taking preventative measures. This means wiping up spills and messes as soon as they happen, and avoiding putting acidic or alkaline liquids directly onto the countertop.

Cleaning Granite Countertops

In order to keep your granite countertops in top condition, you will need to clean them regularly. Start by using mild dish soap, warm water, and a soft cloth to wipe down the surface. This should be done at least once a day to prevent dirt buildup. For tougher messes or stains or in high traffic areas, consider using our specialty 3in1 Granite Cleaner, that is designed for this type of material. Particular types of messes or conditions may necessitate the use of unique cleaning products to achieve optimal results. A neutral pH detergent can be used
on your granite surface.

Sealing Granite Countertops

It’s important to note that your granite is already sealed when it is installed by Amanzi Marble & Granite. We use a 15-year silicone impregnator. This means that your countertop is already protected from stains and liquids, but it’s a good idea to reseal your granite as needed.

How Do I Know When It Is Time to Reseal My Granite Countertop?

As a general rule of thumb, if water beads on your granite, the sealer is still good. If water does not bead on the surface, it is time to reseal. Call us at 1.855.Amanzi if you have any questions on Granite sealing and re-sealing.

Light-colored Granite Vs Dark-colored Granite

We often get asked about the difference between light-colored granite and dark-colored granite and if there is a preference for one over the other when it comes to maintenance and cleanliness. In general, white granite countertops or light-colored granites tend to show water spots more than darker colors. Don’t be fooled by water spots – they don’t mean that your granite isn’t sealed! Your granite needs a sealer that permits the natural stone to breathe and function properly. The purpose of sealing is to provide a protective barrier against liquids for a brief duration, so that you can quickly and easily clean up any spills or water droplets. If you get a water spot on your countertop due to water, it will eventually evaporate and return to its original color. For stubborn stains from oil, wine, or other liquids, a stain remover should can be used to get the job done. Amanzi Marble & Granite can remove the stain for you at a charge or you can make a poultice and remove the stain yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Granite can withstand 1500 degrees F. Putting hot pots or pans on your granite will not harm the granite in any way.

Porcelain Countertops: A Comprehensive Guide

If you are in the market for a new countertop, you may be wondering if porcelain is the right choice for you. This comprehensive guide will tell you everything you need to know about porcelain countertops, including what they are made of, how they are manufactured, and advantages of choosing porcelain.

Porcelain Countertops: What Are They?

Porcelain countertops are made from a special type of ceramic material that is extremely durable and resistant to scratches, stains, and heat. The material is also non-porous, making it ideal for food preparation surfaces and easy to keep clean. Porcelain countertops come in a variety of colors and can be glazed to give them a shine or left unglazed for a more natural look.

Manufacturing Process: How Are Porcelain Countertops Made?

Porcelain countertops are usually made using the dry pressing method. This process involves taking finely ground porcelain particles (known as “body”) and combining them with water in order to form a dough-like substance that is pressed into the desired shape. After being formed, the countertop is then fired at extremely high temperatures – sometimes up to 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit – in order to harden and strengthen it.

Advantages of Porcelain Countertops

There are many advantages of choosing porcelain countertops for your home or business.

Pros of Porcelain Countertops

Stain-Resistant

Porcelain may not be 100% stain-proof, but it is certainly the closest you can get to achieving that perfect spotless surface. Its non-porous surface prevents liquids from absorbing, and any rare stains remain on top of the material making them easy to remove.

Numerous Colors And Patterns

Porcelain countertops are designed to mimic the look and feel of natural stone, with a wide range of colors and patterns available that result in an exquisite finish.

Heat-Resistant

Porcelain countertops are durably crafted with extremely high temperatures, so they can handle hot plates and pots without any damage. Hot pots set on the surface won’t scorch or damage, but it is always advised to use trivets and mats.

Hard & Durable

Porcelain kitchen countertops are not only durable and resilient, but they also have remarkable resistance to any sort of damage. Astonishingly, their durability is only bested by stone and they are generally resistant to damage from wear and tear. Nevertheless, chips and cracks are still a possibility.

Scratch-Resistant

Porcelain is incredibly resilient and will not be easily scratched. Nevertheless, one must exercise caution when handling ceramic knives as they have the potential to cause scratches on porcelain.

Ultraviolet Light Resistant

Porcelain countertops are the perfect option for outdoor kitchens since they won’t be affected by direct sunlight or ultraviolet (UV) light.

Chemical-Resistant

Porcelain surfaces are resistant to acidic foods, beverages, and/or chemicals; it will not suffer from dulling or etching. Furthermore, porcelain countertops are more resistant to discoloration or bleaching than other popular countertop materials.

Sealing Is Not Necessary (Usually)

Porcelain is generally not required to be sealed due to the fire glaze that serves as a barrier against potential staining and moisture. But sealing can be needed in certain cases. An expert in porcelain countertops, such as Amanzi Marble & Granite, can help determine if sealing is needed for your needs.

Environmentally-Friendly And Recyclable

Forged from 100% natural components, porcelain is composed of raw clay materials. In comparison to other man-made surfaces, porcelain is free of any hazardous chemicals or resins.

Porcelain Slabs Are Long-Lasting

Porcelain slabs are made to last for many years, and with a little bit of maintenance and care, they can look like new for a long time.

Searching for the Perfect Porcelain Countertop?

Porcelain countertops are an excellent option for anyone looking to upgrade their kitchen or bathroom. With a wide range of colors and patterns, porcelain can easily be used to complement any design style. And with all its amazing benefits, it is no surprise that porcelain has become increasingly popular as a top choice for new construction or remodeling projects. So if you’re looking for the perfect countertop solution, then porcelain should definitely be at the top of your list!

Quartz Vs Granite – What’s the Difference?

When it comes to countertops, there are a lot of choices to make. Do you want granite, marble, quartz, quartzite, or some other material? Each has its own unique benefits. In this blog post, we will compare quartz and granite in particular to help you decide which is the best choice for your home.

Quartz Vs Granite

Quartz is an engineered stone that is made from natural quartz crystals. Quartz is around 90% ground quartz, a natural mineral found in the earth, and 10% various resins, polymers, and pigments. The raw materials are mixed together and poured into a long, flat, rectangular mold. From here, the materials are compressed by a large machine in order to form quartz slabs. Essentially, all the tiny pieces of quartz mineral and resin are forced together under immense pressure so that they become one large solid object (a slab of quartz). Once all of that compression is done, the quartz is dried and then “baked” in hot machines that use heat and pressure to fully solidify the quartz and ensure that the surface is smooth. Polishing then occurs to give the quartz a beautiful finish. Quartz countertops are non-porous and do not require sealing. They are also more resistant to scratches, stains, and chipping than granite countertops. However, quartz countertops can be more expensive than granite countertops.

Granite, on the other hand, is a natural stone that is mined from the earth. It is an igneous rock that develops through the cooling of magma or lava. The block of granite is then cut into slabs and polished for use in countertops. Granite is one of the strongest and most durable stones, and it is resistant to scratches, stains, and heat damage. However, granite is a porous material. This means that, if it is not properly sealed, liquid is able to penetrate its surface. If liquid or stains get down into the stone, it can result in damages and weakening of your granite. As a result, it must be sealed on a regular basis to prevent staining and reduce the chance of damage. Granite does not crack under ordinary and common use, but can crack if under pressure or hit by something heavy.

Benefits of Quartz

As we mentioned earlier, quartz countertops are non-porous and do not require sealing. They are also more resistant to scratches, stains, and chipping than granite countertops. Quartz is a low-maintenance material that is easy to clean. It is also available in a wide range of colors and patterns.

Benefits of Granite

Granite is a strong and durable material that is also resistant to scratches and stains. Since granite is a natural material, every granite countertop is unique because no two slabs of granite are the same. This beautiful natural stone is a high-quality feature that can add value to your home.

What’s the Difference in Appearance of a Quartz and Granite Countertop?

Quartz countertops have a more uniform appearance. The color and pattern are consistent throughout the countertop. Granite countertops have a natural, veined appearance. Most granite countertops are packed with rich, naturally forming patterns that make every kitchen and bathroom surface look unique. Veining can be subtle or dramatic, as they are created by different minerals that are found in the granite. Regardless, both types are beautiful options for your home.

Which Countertop Is More Durable?

Quartz countertops are non-porous and do not require sealing. Granite is a very strong and durable material, but it is porous. This means that it can stain easily if it is not sealed on a regular basis. While both are strong countertop materials, quartz tends to be more resistant to scratches, stains, and chipping than granite countertops.

Which Countertop Is More Expensive?

In general, quartz countertops tend to be more expensive than granite countertops. However, the price difference will vary depending on the quality of the materials used and the brand.

Which Countertop Is Better For Your Home?

The best countertop for your home depends on your personal preference and needs. If you want a non-porous countertop that provides extra protection against scratches and stains, then quartz is a good choice. If you want a natural stone that is strong and durable, then granite might be right for you. Ultimately, the decision comes down to what you value most in a countertop and whether you mind the extra maintenance required by granite countertops.

Which Countertop is Easier to Maintain?

As mentioned earlier, quartz countertops are easier to maintain because they do not require sealing. Granite countertops must be sealed on a regular basis to prevent staining.

Which Countertop is More Heat Resistant?

Granite is more heat resistant than quartz. However, both materials can withstand high temperatures.

Quartz Vs Granite: Which is Right For You?

Both quartz and granite are strong and durable materials that are available in a wide range of colors and patterns. Quartz countertops are non-porous and do not require sealing. They are also more resistant to scratches, stains, and chipping than granite countertops. Granite is a strong and durable material that is resistant to scratches and stains. However, granite is a porous material, so it must be sealed on a regular basis to prevent staining. Ultimately, the decision of which countertop to choose depends on your personal preference and needs. If you’re still struggling to make a decision, speak with a countertop specialist such as Amanzi Marble & Granite.
