Natural stone floor tiles are remarkably durable and generally last for decades. But they do require some upkeep if they are to maintain their appealing look. Nothing laborious, just some basic maintenance tasks carried out every once in a while.

Keep the dirt away

You want to begin by preventing your stone floor from getting dirty. Dirt doesn’t only spoil the appearance of your floor, but in time it also damages it. Place walk-off mats at your exterior entrances and shake them clean periodically. Use a high-quality mat, whose non-slip rubber backing doesn’t stain your floor.

Sweep and mop

Sweeping your natural stone floor and mopping it frequently are necessary to keeping it in a good condition. Floors made from natural stone do not require heavy mopping. When you mop your floor you want to avoid all cleaners not specially made for your type of floor. Acidic cleaners such as those containing vinegar or lemon juice damage your floor irremediably. Also avoid abrasive cleaners, whether dry or soft, as these dull the sheen of your floor tiles.

Seal

Avoiding staining your stone floor tiles is important. Untreated floor tiles always stain in time. Sealants are one kind of product that can help you avoid floor tiles stains. Money spent on high-quality sealants are a great investment.

Rinse

From time to time, it’s a good idea to rinse the floor with clean water and dry the surface with a cloth. You want to avoid using soaps or cleaners if there is no need for them, as they usually leave a film behind. The water you use should be sand-free, else you risk to irremediably scratch the floor while moping.

Avoid scratching and chipping

Even high-quality floor tiles can get easily scratched or chipped. Stone scratching and chipping frequently occur when moving furniture or other heavy objects across the floor. So it’s a good idea that when you bring in new furniture or do away with old one you get a few helping hands to lift the heavy objects and carry them, rather than drag them yourself. The big problem with floor tiles scratching or chipping is that it cannot be repaired, and in time the initial damage tends to get only worse.

In the end, natural stone floor tiles are highly durable and don’t require much maintenance. Once you install them, you won’t have much to worry about.
